JUDO

First visit

New to judo or to our dojo? Here’s what to expect and how to prepare.

What to expect

Classes are mixed level. We warm up, practice techniques (often in pairs), and may do some randori (sparring). The instructor will guide you through. Your first session will focus on basics and safety.

You can watch for a few minutes when you arrive if you prefer, or join in when you’re ready.

What to wear

For your first visit, wear comfortable athletic clothing: a t-shirt and long pants (no zippers or pockets that could catch fingers or toes). Avoid jewelry and keep nails short.

If you decide to continue, you’ll need a judogi (judo uniform). We can advise on where to get one.

When and where

We train Tuesdays 7:30PM–8:30PM and Saturdays 10AM–11:30AM at Gracie Tampa South. Arriving a few minutes early for your first time is helpful.

Before you come

Skim the dojo etiquette on the About page. The main idea: bow when entering and leaving the mat, bow to your partner, and follow the instructor. If you’re unsure, just ask.
