History of Judo

Judo was founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, a Japanese educator who sought to modernize traditional jujutsu by removing its most dangerous techniques and emphasizing physical education, moral development, and practical effectiveness. Kano established the Kodokan in Tokyo, where he systematized Judo around principles of balance, leverage, and efficiency. Central to Judo are the concepts of seiryoku zenyo (maximum efficiency, minimum effort) and jita kyoei (mutual welfare and benefit), which reflect Kano's belief that martial training should develop both the body and character. Through randori (free practice), kata (formal forms), and competition, Judo became a disciplined yet dynamic method of training applicable to sport, self-defense, and personal growth.

During the 20th century, Judo spread internationally through education, military training, and sport, becoming one of the first Japanese martial arts practiced worldwide. It was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1964, solidifying its status as a global competitive sport while maintaining its traditional educational roots. Today, Judo is practiced by millions across all ages and backgrounds, influencing modern grappling arts—most notably Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—through its emphasis on throwing, grip fighting, and positional control. Despite its evolution as a sport, Judo remains grounded in Kano's original vision: a lifelong practice that builds skill, discipline, respect, and cooperation through rigorous physical training.
