If you've been searching for judo classes in Tampa, FL, Hughey's Judo is the city's home for traditional Kodokan-style judo. We train at Gracie Tampa South — a respected martial arts academy at 1345 W Gray St in Tampa — and we welcome everyone from total beginners to experienced competitors.

What is judo?

Judo is a Japanese martial art and Olympic sport built around throwing, pinning, and submission techniques. Founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, judo emphasizes leverage and timing over brute strength. The principles — seiryoku zenyo (maximum efficiency, minimum effort) and jita kyoei (mutual welfare and benefit) — make it one of the most rewarding martial arts in Tampa for long-term development.

If you've trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, or another grappling art, you'll find judo's grip-fighting and throwing game adds an entirely new dimension to your skill set. If you're new to martial arts entirely, judo teaches you how to fall safely and control your body in a way few other sports do.

Where and when we train in Tampa

Hughey's Judo trains at Gracie Tampa South in Tampa, FL. Our weekly schedule:

  • Tuesday evenings: 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM
  • Saturday mornings: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Saturday is the longer session with more time for randori (live sparring). Tuesday tends to be more technical and accessible if you're brand new.

Who judo is for

Our classes are mixed level. On any given mat, you'll find white belts working on their first hip throw alongside competitors prepping for regional tournaments. We train men, women, and teens. The dojo culture is friendly and supportive — judo is competitive, but it's also cooperative by design. You can't practice throws without a partner who's willing to be thrown.

If you're looking for martial arts in Tampa that build real physical skill, discipline, and lifelong friendships, judo deserves a serious look.

How to start

The first class is free. You don't need a gi (judo uniform) for your first visit — comfortable athletic clothes are fine. We'll show you how to fall safely, introduce a couple of beginner-friendly techniques, and let you decide whether judo is for you.
