Ashi-waza (foot techniques) reap, sweep, or hook uke’s legs to break balance and throw.

Introduced at (syllabus): white belt level (see belt requirements ).

Required for belt requirements: White Belt.

Description

A technique to reap the opponent’s right leg from the outside with the right leg and throw him down by breaking his balance backward. (Kodokan definition)

Key points

  1. Break uke’s balance to the rear corner.
  2. Step in with the reaping leg close to uke’s leg.
  3. Reap the leg while driving your body forward.
  4. Maintain control of the sleeve and lapel throughout.

Notes

Timing is critical. The reap should happen as uke’s weight is on the target leg.
