Seoi-Nage - Shoulder Throw

Category and classification

Te-waza (hand techniques) use the arms and upper body to break balance and complete throws.

Belt context

Introduced at (syllabus): white belt level (see belt requirements ).

Description

A technique to throw the opponent over the right shoulder by breaking his balance forward and inserting the right elbow underneath his right armpit to carry him on the back. (Kodokan definition)

Key points

  1. Break uke’s balance forward (kuzushi).
  2. Turn in deeply, back to uke’s chest.
  3. Load uke onto your back; keep the arm tight.
  4. Throw by extending the legs and pulling down with the arms.

Notes

Practice the entry and hand placement. The throw works best when uke is already moving forward.
